BlueSky Photo Workshop

I discovered that art and photography can be essential communication tools through taking an introductory photo class at college after moving to Minnesota from Japan in the early '90s. I couldn't speak English, so taking and sharing photographs helped me communicate with others, and it was a mind-blowing experience. The impact of the experience was remarkable: it opened up my life, allowing me to live in this country, where everything was new and foreign. I have remained here for decades, continuing to work on my art practices to this day.

In 2022, I started running the BlueSky Photo Workshop for the community. It is a free, open-to-the-public, all-ages program with four sessions throughout the year: spring, summer, fall, and winter. Classes are held at local Japanese restaurants in the Twin Cities, such as Okome House and Ramen Kazama, among others. We learn and practice various aspects of history, mediums, and different photographic styles throughout the six-week course. The workshop allows people to connect with others and the community through photography. I hope people will have a similar experience to mine in college through participating in the BlueSky Photo Workshop.

This program is pivotal for my path: I want to give back my knowledge and experience to the community that helped me grow. The slogan is "Everyone is welcome; experience is not necessary."
